Kitchen Sink Leak Repair

A kitchen sink faucet leaking underneath your cabinets or a dripping drain pipe is certainly annoying but being able to spot the leak early helps prevent serious damage.

Kitchen sink leak repair. Use locking or adjustable pliers to reach next to the drain and turn the nut hopefully sealing off the leak. Repairing a leak under the kitchen sink can be as simple as tightening a connector piece but it can also be far more complicated requiring large replacements or professional repairs. If the faucet isn t leaking fill the sink with water then let it drain and watch for water dripping from the p trap assembly as the water flows. Turn on the faucet and leave open allowing the remaining water in the line to empty into the sink.

Occasionally the leak may come from an old and worn out drain that is beyond repair. If there aren t individual shutoff valves under the sink shut off the water supply for the house. In these instances it is better just to contact a plumber and replace the drain completely. You may see water dripping or spraying from a faucet connection and if so there s your leak.

Bar sink sized basket. Fix a leaky faucet shut off the water twist the valve under your sink to turn off the water supply valve or valves. If the leak is coming from a pressurized water hose spray will probably be immediately apparent. A drain is usually sealed with plumber s putty to prevent further leaks.

To identify where the leak is coming from just plug your sink with the drains cover. Fix or replace the traps. However the putty can be too thin to start with or it might dry out over time. In some cases the leak may not be simply from a faulty connection but from a corroded p trap which is the bent section in a pipe that keeps the nasty gasses from returning back up the pipe.

Go under the cabinet with a flashlight and inspect the faucet hoses. Plug the drain with the stopper and turn on the faucet until the basin is filled with about an inch of water. Leave the water in place and check beneath the sink to see whether any is escaping. The drain could be the cause of your kitchen sink leaking.
